Frequently Asked Questions
To film documentaries in India, one requires a J visa. For filming fiction or reality programs, one needs to obtain a filming visa. Both visas can only be applied for after obtaining filming permissions from the Government of India.
Step 1: Producers must apply for permission from the Government of India in their own countries at the Indian Embassy.
Step 2: The Embassy will obtain approval from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in Delhi, as well as the Railway Ministry, Forest Ministry, Ministry of Defence, and Home Ministry as necessary based on filming locations.
Step 3: The Embassy will provide the approval letter to producers and a J visa will be obtained for the crew.
Step 4: Actual location permits (all handled by us):
- Local administration permit
- Local forest office permit
- Archaeological
- Survey of India permit for heritage monuments
- Airports permits
- Railway station permits
Step 1: Producers must apply online for permission at www.ffo.gov.in/en. There is a fee of $225 for this, which must be paid online.
Step 2: Approval will be sent to producers via email, allowing them to apply for the Film Visa for cast and crew.
Step 3: Actual location permits will be taken care of by us, including:
- Local administration permit
- Local forest office permit
- Archaeological Survey of India permit for heritage monuments
- Airport permits
- Railway station permits
For documentary filming, the turnaround time can range from 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the complexity of the locations. For reality/fiction shows, the turnaround is 21 working days.
